Volunteer Fire Department

The Maywood Volunteer Fire Department protects the borough of Maywood in suburban Bergen County, NJ. Our region is considered part of the New York City Metropolitan area, less than ten miles away from Manhattan.  We train constantly and work towards the label of being an “all-hazards” department.  In 2018, the dedicated firefighters of the Maywood Volunteer Fire Department responded to 366 incidents.

Responsible to protect the town are 60 brave men and women who are the active force of the Maywood Volunteer Fire Department. The department traces its roots back to 1897 as one of the fire first fire departments in the county.  A 100% volunteer department, The Fire Department responds out of two unmanned fire stations and maintains four front line pieces of apparatus including a 1995 1,250 gpm Pumper, a 2008 2,000 gpm Pumper, a 2018 105’ Ladder and a 1995 fire rescue vehicle.

Training has always been a priority for our firefighters. The members of the Fire Department meet weekly to check the equipment to make sure it is ready to be used in a moment’s notice, and train on various firefighting skills. All active firefighters are trained to the Firefighter 1 guidelines of NFPA 1001.  In addition, a significant portion also meet the level of Firefighter 2.  Many members have attained additional training including rescue operations, hazardous materials, fire officer development and RIT/FAST operations.  We are fully compliant with the National Incident Management System, with all firefighters completing federally mandated training.
