Volunteer Fire Police
The Maywood Fire Police is an all-volunteer organization comprised of 23 members (both male and female) that provide an average of 2500 man hours of service to the Borough each year. Organized in 1926, we fall under the command structure of the Maywood Fire Department and operate Fire Police One (FP1), a 2002 Ford Pick-up Truck outfitted to respond to emergency situations and carrying equipment to the scene.
Fire Police members are trained by the Bergen County Fire Academy and meet all requirements of NJ State Statute 15:8-4. All members are issued the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect themselves. We drill as a Company and join with the Fire Department for the monthly Departmental Drills.
Mission
The Fire Police work with the town's Fire, Police and OEM departments, providing traffic control, crowd control and other assistance as needed. We respond to all fire calls within Maywood's borders, assisting emergency equipment through major intersections, and providing traffic and crowd control at the scenes after the equipment arrives.
We assist in many diversified areas, including but not limited to:
- Providing traffic control at major intersections during power outages, flooded streets, snow storms, hurricanes and major motor vehicle accidents
- Providing assistance with traffic/crowd control at emergency scenes, such as downed electrical wires, downed trees, robbery scenes, and bomb threat scenes.
- Participating in searches for missing people and distribution of important flyers throughout the town.
- Providing support for special events of a non-emergency nature (Rotary 5k run, Chamber of Commerce events in the business district, Maywood Avenue School Annual 5k run, and National Night Out).
In 2018, we assumed and carry on the responsibility of the SantaCade, a 75-year Borough Tradition. Our members plan and execute this 10-stop trip where Santa travels aboard his reindeer-drawn sleigh stopping to visit with children throughout the Borough on Christmas Eve.
